Excuse Diana and I for smiling a lot at the moment. We can’t help it. We’ve won our very-first food award and we couldn’t be happier!
It seems like ages ago that Délices was nominated for Best Artisan Bakery in the Bedfordshire Food and Drink Awards 2017. Just being nominated made us happy and we went into work with even more of a spring in our step than usual. Then, last month, it was the day of the final and off I went to Putteridge Bury House and Gardens in Luton (Diana was away en vacances).
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t good enough (unlike the amazing sunshine now!) for everyone to sit outside in the beautiful grounds, but inside we had some canapés while we waited for the results to be called. There were 180 finalists at the awards ceremony and by the look on some of their faces I could see that this was a very serious competition indeed!
And then, suddenly, I heard Délices announced as ‘Highly Commended’ in the Best Artisan Bakery category. I have to say it was both an exciting and nervous moment for me. I realised I’d have to walk across a long, crowded room to reach the stage and wondered if I’d get there fast enough. Well I made it, and the host Rachael Downie congratulated me and handed me a framed award. (And I must say congratulations to the winners, The Little Buzzard Bakery in Leighton Buzzard, and also to Colmworth Micro Bakery, who were ‘Commended’).
Of course there was no hanging around to celebrate – I had an award-winning French bakery to run!! When I arrived back at Délices I discovered that one of the pumps in the kitchen had started to misbehave and my staff were busy mopping up water. ‘Zut!’ I thought and got straight on the phone to our equipment supplier. This bakery business isn’t an always glamorous one, you know – so it’s just as well that both Diana and I love it!!
The awards weren’t just about winning. I also made a fantastic new contact, Robin Sibley from The Wooden Hill Coffee Company in Ampthill, who was ‘Commended’ in the Independent Food Retailer/Producer of the Year category. Robin runs an ethical business selling Fair Trade coffee in bio-degrable bags, which he delivers in reusable wooden crates. His local business is exactly the kind that Diana and I like working with so we’ve now snapped him up to supply our Délices coffee. Taste it and you’ll understand why we’re so impressed!
Well before I get back to the kitchen of our award-winning bakery – come on, I can boast a little, no? – Diana and I would like to thank everyone who voted for Délices. We were truly delighted that so many customers took the trouble to cast their votes for us. And we’re so happy that so many people are enjoying our taste of Paris. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved here in our French bakery in Bedford and we hope to bring lots more exciting tastes to everyone.
As I like to think, sometimes even if it’s only for the stomach, it’s good to have immigrants!
* Pop into our award-winning (OK, OK, I will speak of this no more!) French bakery for something savoury or sweet – or both! – soon.
